BRS opens new office in Switzerland and expands in the Middle East

Leading international shipbroker Barry Rogliano Salles (BRS) has opened a new office in Geneva to serve the growing number of shipowners, oil companies and traders located in this fast-expanding shipping centre.

BRS (Geneva) will initially dedicate its efforts to Tanker Chartering (Spot and Time-Charter) and Newbuilding Projects, and expects to roll out more services in the future. The office will complement the existing activity of BRS’ Paris office in Geneva.

The company has appointed four brokers to the office. Gilbert Walter transfers from BRS’ newbuilding team in Paris, while Tim Webb and Danny O’Connor will relocate from the Paris tanker chartering team. The company has also recruited Kirill Ponomarenko, previously with Sovcomflot in Geneva.

A recent study by the Geneva Trading & Shipping Association (GTSA) shows Geneva accounts for more than one-fifth of the world’s tanker and drybulk chartering business. Some 500 million tonnes of oil and product cargos, and 350 million tonnes of major dry-bulk cargo, are chartered out of the city each year, according to the GTSA.

Meanwhile BRS is also strengthening its Middle Eastern business with the appointment of a new product and chemical tanker broker. Alexandros Annivas will join BRS’ Dubai office, where he will look to further develop the business for small tankers (<20,000-dwt), and ‘easy’ chemicals.

“The growing presence of the oil majors in the small tanker sector has underlined the need for first-class tonnage and service of the highest quality,” said Mathieu Philippe, head of BRS Middle East.

The company is also targeting expansion in the growing regional market for easy chemicals, notably methanol, caustic soda and MTBE. Dubai-based BRS Middle East currently employs six brokers, and is active in Tanker Chartering (Crude and Product), Drybulk and Projects-based business.

BRS recently launched a new subsidiary, BRS Yachting, to offer chartering, newbuilding and sale and purchase services in the market for luxury super-yachts.
